Dredging & disposal
Dredging and disposal is a major component of the terminal construction scheme.
Capital dredging will be required to:
- widen and deepen parts of the existing Severn Estuary deep water channel to provide an approach channel of 14m below CD (chart datum). Much of this channel is already at or near the necessary depth, and will require less than 1m of dredging.
- create a vessel turning area adjacent to the quay to a depth of 14m below CD and berthing pockets alongside the quay wall to a depth of 18m below CD.
Disposal of dredged material will include use of sands and gravels for reclamation landfill and the placement of remaining dredge material at existing and new disposal sites in the Severn Estuary.
