Habitat creation at the Steart Peninsula
STEART HABITAT CREATION - Creating habitat for the future
Why is Bristol Port creating habitat on the Steart Peninsula?
The UK cannot accommodate the future demand for container ships. The Bristol Port Company has consent to build a new container terminal in Avonmouth to accommodate the largest deep-sea ships.
Constructing this new container terminal will involve some reclamation of the foreshore on which birds currently feed and roost. To compensate for that loss, the Port must create at least 120 hectares of new ‘compensatory’ habitat for wetland birds and other wildlife.
The aim is to create habitat that is sustainable with minimum ongoing management.
Key to this are:
-
To deliver the new habitat in advance of damage to designated habitats during the construction of the new container terminal

-
To create coastal wetlands that can be enjoyed by both people and wildlife long into the future
-
Consistency with local plans and strategies
-
To promote the participation of communities during planning, development and operation
-
Improved protection against flooding from the Severn Estuary
